Catalogue Note
Les rues photographiées selon un procédé rigoureux hérité de l’enseignement des Becher sont silencieuses, immobiles et inhabitées, en opposition avec la nature même de la ville: un espace assourdissant, dynamique et grouillant. Aucune présence humaine sur ces photographies n’est visible – ce sont des scènes vides qui attendent l’entrée de leurs acteurs, pourtant, les traces d’activité vibrent dans le paysage cerné de constructions humaines. L’espace architectural ainsi agencé par l’homme est imprégné d'une atmosphère et d'une 'sonorité' qui confèrent à chaque ville une personnalité propre et permet de lire en filigrane la relation inconsciente de ce même espace avec notre condition mentale. C’est d'ailleurs la raison pour laquelle Thomas Struth a appelé son travail sur les paysages urbains: Unconscious Places.
