Reputedly presented by Queen Elizabeth I to George Sinclair, 5th Earl of Caithness (1566-1643) (according to a label on the reverse);

Condition

The panel, composed of three vertical planks, is uncradled and has a slight convex curve. The paint surface is secure and clean. Good quality impasto remains in the jewelry. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals small, scattered retouchings throughout the face, hair and costume. These have been carried out sensitively and are difficult to detect with the naked eye. The work is offered in a simple stained wood frame, in reasonable condition.
