Literature

J. Steegman, A Survey of Portraits in Welsh Houses, Cardiff 1957, vol. I, p. 19, cat. no. 1.

Condition

The panel is uncradled and constructed of two vertically joined planks. The join in stable. There are old holes at the very edges of the panel at irregular intervals that are visible just inside the sight of the frame. The paint surface is very dirty but stable. The varnish is somewhat discoloured and there are scattered old discoloured retouchings visible to the naked eye, mainly in the background (and to a 1 inch old surface crack on the left margin half way up the panel, caused by a knot in the wood), and a very few small retouches in the flesh of the lady's face. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals only the aforementioned retouches, and a thick uneven varnish that fluoresces opaque. In excellent, largely untouched, 'country house condition'. Offered in a gesso and wood gilt frame with some losses throughout and little gilt remaining.
