Catalogue Note

This elegant portrait sits within an elaborate painted border, with roses adorning the top of the painted circular frame.  The portrait, which is highly finished and executed in gouache, must have been a work of art in its own right or a presentation piece.  In terms of composition, it is in a similar vein to the portraits produced by Charles Nicolas Cochin (1715-1790), who often depicted his sitters within decorative surrounds with pedestals and cartouche designs.  No other work by Vincent entirely comparable to this is known.
