Condition
The former has a relining, the latter remains unlined. Overall the paint surface is in good condition with colours well-preserved. In the former, there is an original seam in the canvas, running horizontally 13 cm. from the lower edge, noticeable in raking light.
Inspection under ultraviolet light shows in the former a dense area of restoration in the right hand side of the canvas, specifically in the draperies of the figures, including the kneeling Samuel. In texture this area seems to have been affected by heat in the past. There is also repair to the seam on the far left, and some scattered retouchings in the background. In the latter canvas, ultraviolet light reveals light restrengthening in the background, small scattered retouchings in the foreground, and a denser patch of restoration upper left, measuring 4 x 6 cm.
The pair are offered in matching frames, painted black with gold embellishments on the corners, in good condition.

These are particularly fine examples of the work of the Sevillian landscape painter Francisco Antolínez. They are distinctive for the larger scale of the figures within the landscape settings, less typically found within his oeuvre.
