The canvas is unlined and slightly loose in its stretcher. The varnish is old, dirty and appears ineffective. The darker pigments there is flakiness beginning to form, but not yet in danger of lifting from the surface. There is a band of missing paint flakes along the lower margin and one or two larger missing flakes upper right. Elsewhere very small dots of missing paint visible, particularly along the margins where a previous frame has rubbed. There is good impasto remaining, particularly in the face and hands. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows four stroked of restrengthening to the Saint's hair and another single stroke to the front of his forehead, as well as very few scattered spot retouchings elsewhere. A milky varnish is also visible. This lot is offered without a frame.
