Description

  • Marcantonio Franceschini
  • The Penitent Mary Magdalen lying outside a grotto
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has an old relining. Good quality impasto is visible in the foliage. The paint surface is secure, except for a small area at the upper left. Small areas of retouching are visible in the left foot of the Magdalen and the lower part of her robe. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an even and opaque varnish which makes it difficult to detect any further retouchings. Overall the work is in good condition. This lot is offered in a gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

Dr. Fabio Chiodini dates this work to the late 1670s, when Franceschini was beginning to establish his independence as an artist. The drapery can be compared to another early canvas of the same subject (119 by 147 cm.)1 Both pictures are still clearly reminiscent of the style of Franceschini's teacher, Carlo Cignani.
