Description

  • A goddess flanked by a snake and a dog appearing in a temple
  • inscribed lower left: da Rici
  • oil on canvas, unlined

Provenance

Guido Conrad de Konradsheim, Vienna;
From whom purchased in 1978 by the father of the present owner.

Condition

The canvas has an old relining, which has stiffened, and is slightly loose in its stretcher. The paint surface is dirty and covered by a yellowed varnish. There are stretcher marks visible - the most pronounced along the upper margin. The colours are well-preserved and the impasto is thick in many places. There is a small area of paint just beginning to flake in the lower right corner. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows four small retouchings along the upper stretcher mark (the largest of which measures 2 x 1 cm.) Also, a repaired hole in the top part of the statue of the rightmost niche, and a repaired damage on the lowest step, just left of centre. There are otherwise a handful of minor spot retouchings visible. This lot is offered in a carved and gilt wood frame, with some minor surface knocks, but otherwise sound.
