Condition

The original panel has been thinned and laid on to a canvas support. The reason seems to have been a series of large old vertical splits, the first running up from the bottom edge to the right of the book to the sitter's shoulder, the second running the height of the panel from her left wrist, and the third running down from the top edge in the upper right hand corner. There are some scattered old minor losses associated with each of these. the painting is now dirty and the varnish layer very yellowed. The paint surface appears in generally very good condition, with no other major damages or repairs evident. Ultra violet light reveals restoration to each old split, and evenly scattered local retouchings , the two largest of c. 1 x 1 cm lower left and on the sitter's left sleeve, and the lower left corner shadows have all been reworked, but apart from these the majority seem to be of a minor and local nature. Offered in a fine twentieth-century hand-carved and gilded reproduction of a period pattern frame, in very good condition.
