Description

  • Frans Hals
  • Portrait of gentleman with a moustache, half-length, wearing a black broad-rimmed hat and a white ruff, holding a pair of gloves
  • oil on oak panel, in a feigned oval frame

Condition

The panel has an old cradle which is providing good support. The painting has fairly recently been cleaned and restored and is in reasonable overall condition. Much of the man's hat has been repainted, and the background largely washed over in the past and repainted in the lower left corner. The details of the figure are well preserved, with only minor interventions and local strengthening in evidence here. The varnish remains clear but a little uneven, but part from this the painting should not require any further attention. Offered with a later French style gilt wood frame, some chips and losses.
