Catalogue Note

A rapid drawing by Giambattista of two standing figures, possibly two sculptures, this sheet is characterized by the masterly use of the pen and ink, with strong and bold touches, enriched by subtle and delicately applied wash. The artist here makes full use of the white surface of the paper, to achieve a natural and effective source of light, a characteristic that always defines the unique luminosity of Giambattista's drawings.  The zig-zag strokes in the draped cloth on the left side of the figure on the right must have been intended by the artist as corrections.  Stylistically the present sheet is not far from drawings relating to Tiepolo's fresco decoration of the Villa Valmarana, near Vicenza, a project datable to the late 1750s.
