Condition

The picture appears to be made up of four vertical panels, which have been partially thinned on the reverse. A cradle has been attached as well as butterfly staples. There are four major repaired splits running vertically the whole way down spread across the picture. There are also two smaller splits: the first measuring 37 cm., running vertically from the lower left edge, the second measuring 13 cm., running vertically from the upper right edge. The paint surface is very dirty. There are numerous small areas where the paint is beginning to destabilise, for the most part in the dark background colours. There are a few missing flakes of paint in the female figure lower right corner. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the repair to the four major joints, and the aforementioned scattered retouchings, but nothing more. This lot is offered in a modern wood frame, with some gold painted decoration, in good condition. For all sales which take place on or after 1 February 2015, please note that the rate of buyer's premium for each lot (charged as a percentage of the hammer price achieved for that lot) has been revised and shall be calculated at the thresholds set out below: Buyer's premium is 25% of the hammer price up to and including £100,000; Buyer's premium is 20% of the hammer price on any amount in excess of £100, 000 up to and including £1,800,000; Buyer's premium is 12% of the hammer price on any amount in excess of £1,800,000.
