Catalogue Note

The Order of the Iron Cross 1870 was only awarded nine times. Two members of the Imperial family were awarded this high decoration, the Generalfieldmarschall Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia (1831-1888) and his father, Kaiser Wilhelm I (1797-1888). The Princely order of the Principality of Hohenzollern was founded in 1871, and was originally awarded in two classes, with a third being added in 1844. The order is still awarded today to the head of the family.
