Condition

Overall condition very good and fresh. Attached with tape to back of mount front, all along top edge. Very slightly thin at extreme left edge, from previous album mounting. Very light near-vertical crease close to left edge. Sold in a carved and gilded frame.

Catalogue Note

La composition est basée sur une esquisse que van Goyen aurait probablement réalisé au milieu des années 1640, sûrement dans les Pays-Bas méridionaux (Beck Z 660, vendu à  Amsterdam, Christie’s 10 décembre 2014, lot 213). On retrouve une composition similaire dans un autre dessin daté de 1653 (Beck Z 423).

The composition is based on a sketch that van Goyen made, probably in the mid-1640s, perhaps in the southern Netherlands (Beck Z 660, sold Amsterdam, Christie’s, 10 December 2014, lot 213). Another drawing, dated 1653, is also very similar in composition (Beck Z 423).
