Catalogue Note

This is Bellini's unpublished covering letter to his appeal to Alessandro Lamperi for assistance regarding a pirated performing score of Norma.  Lamperi was Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Turin, and Bellini often looked to him to exert influence on the opera houses.   In the lengthy enclosure, Bellini asked Lamperi's assistance in preventing the impresario at the Teatro Regio from using a pirated version of Norma, which had been orchestrated incorrectly from the printed vocal score.  That letter is published in L. Cambi. Bellini. Epistolario (1943), letter no. 172 (pp.403-405) and C. Neri, Lettere di Vincenzo Bellini (1991), letter 208 (pp.275-276), but there is no mention in either of the present unpublished covering note.  Bellini does not yet name the opera (I puritani, premiered in Paris on 24 January 1835), but in the enclosure addressed to Lamperi explains that he has as yet only composed four pieces.
