  • A capriccio view of Rome with the Colosseum and Rebecca and Eliezer by a statue of Zeus
  • signed and indistinctly dated lower center: G.V. NIEVLANDT / FEC . 1610(?); inscribed lower right with possible fragment of old inventory number: 72, and inscribed on reverse of copper plate with old handwritten inventory number: N725; stamped on reverse of copper plate with the maker's mark of Pieter Stas, the date 1609, and the coat-of-arms of the city of Antwerp.

Condition

On copperplate which is flat and stable. Overall there is very good retention of the paint surface with very nice retention of detail in foreground figures and landscape, and strong coloration. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals that there are numerous scattered retouches in the sky at the upper left quadrant of the picture. The other portions of the painting have far fewer retouches with just a few scattered here and there. Offered in a brown wood frame with gilding at the outer and inner rims.
