Literature

In the Presence of Things: Four Centuries of European Still-Life Painting, exhibition catalogue, Lisbon 2010, vol. I, p. 91, reproduced plate 62.

Condition

The canvas has a rather heavy relining. There are a few scattered and somewhat broadly applied retouches which appear to sit on top of an uneven varnish. These retouches are mainly along the outlines of some of the still life elements and appear to the naked eye as darkened areas of brown paint which could certainly be adjusted. The canvas has been somewhat pressed due to the tight relining and a new lining could help the picture breath. This, along with a fresh varnish would certainly brighten and improve the overall appearance. In a card to giltwood frame.

Catalogue Note

Only a few works are currently ascribed to the rare Andalusian artist, Francisco Barranco, who was a contemporary of Juan de Zurbarán and active in Seville in the 1640s and 1650s.  This painting shares a similar composition and subject matter with another work by Barranco, Still Life with Dead Birds and Chocolate Service, which is signed and dated 1647.1

We are grateful to Dr. Peter Cherry for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.
