Description

  • A lady as Cleopatra
  • inscribed on the reverse of the panel: M.F. LA DVCHESSE DE LONGVEVILLE
  • oil on panel, unframed

Condition

Panel is uncradled. Under a dirty and uneven old varnish. There is a small crack in the panel at the lower left corner and another slight crack that runs from the top edge at left into hair (this is just barely visible to the naked eye). The paint surface has been well retained and there is good preservation of impasto. There are small discolored retouches to the face and neck. Under UV: retouches as mentioned fluoresce; the background area to right and left of her head fluoresce, but it is difficult to tell if this is due to retouching or just unevenness in the varnish. This painting should respond well to sensitive cleaning and the freshening of the old restorations.
