Description

  • Hubert Robert
  • Figures in a crypt
  • oil on canvas, oval

Condition

The canvas is relined. This painting does present reasonably well to the naked eye though it is clear that there are significant retouches throughout the entirety of the composition. UV light reveals very broad and generalized retouches throughout the entire composition, notably wide swaths in the background and the staircase and throughout parts of the arch. The figures themselves also have retouching but the vast majority is in the background, and in the barrel vault, and most of the architecture. The picture should be shown to restorer to determine how much of this retouching is actually necessary and how much could be removed. In a carved giltwood frame.
