Condition

There is an old glue relining and more recent strip relining at edges. paint surface is under a very thick and yellowed varnish. There are some scattered small paint losses: on books at lower right, in the upper background, a few on costume and one slightly larger one at extreme upper right corner. Minor scuffing at edges. There appears to be an old repair in the curtain at right side where surface is somewhat uneven. Generally, the paint surface has been well retained and figure and objects read well. Under UV light: it is difficult to see through the thick old varnish. There are some retouches to the book he is holding; others in background at left just above his shoulder and also on his shoulder; some can be seen in folds of curtain at right. There are possibly others, but it is difficult to tell. This painting would benefit from a light cleaning and sensitive restoration which should improve the appearance. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame with losses to the gilding.
