Condition

Oil on canvas, with a relatively new lining. The surface is somewhat pressed and slightly thin in areas, especially the darks. Dirt that has settled into the weave of the coarse canvas is visible in the lighter pigments of the subjects face and hands. Minor frame abrasions are visible at the extreme edges. There is some evidence of a fold to the canvas across the center and some evidence of stretcher bar marks or a potential extension of the canvas at the extreme edges. Under UV light, the majority of the surface is obscured by a green fluorescing varnish. There are older spots and small areas of retouching in the background. The varnish appears to have been cleaned from the subjects sleeves, hands and face; minor scattered retouches are visible in these areas. There is an area over the subjects proper left eye that may be a repaired loss or tear. The aforementioned horizontal line that extends from the right edge into the subject's hands fluoresces under black light.
