Condition

Watercolor and pencil heightened with wash and gum Arabic on paper. The work is float mounted and the edges of the sheet are visible. Minor rippling throughout. Some minor losses at the extreme edges, especially at center left edge. Probable repair to upper left corner. Pinpoint spots of discoloration visible in the upper right edge. The colors remain relatively fresh. Not observed out of the frame. Ready to hang.

Catalogue Note

This drawing is related in conception and subject matter to the large oil entitled The Israelites leaving Egypt which was exhibited at the Society of British Artists in 1829 and is now in the Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery. A watercolour on this theme entitled Aaron delivering the Message of the Elders of Israel is in the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum Liverpool (see H. Guiterman and G. Llewellyn, David Roberts, Barbican Art Gallery Exhibition Catalogue, 1986-7, no. 114, pl. 62 and no. 115, pl. 21).
