Description

  • platinum, sapphire
Centering a cushion-cut sugarloaf cabochon sapphire weighing 25.87 carats, flanked by two bullet-cut diamonds weighing approximately .40 carat, size 5; 1930s.

Condition

The mounting in good condition with moderate surface scratching commensurate with regular wear. Minor porosity where the expandable shank was later attached. The sapphire is a vibrant, medium-deep, very slightly violetish blue that maintains its rich saturation when viewed from all angles. Very minor color zoning under a penlight, but even color distribution under normal lighting conditions. Slightly included with minor reflective silk in one quadrant, and a few very minor chips along the edge of the girdle which are only visible when the stone is unmounted. Minute feather under the peak visible under 10x magnification. Minute abrading to the crown but a high overall polish. Nicely crystalline for a Kashmir, particularly for cabochon material. The diamonds are approximately G-H color, VS clarity. Accompanied by AGL report no. CS 68862 stating that the sapphire is of Kashmir origin, clarity enhancement: none. Accompanied by Gübelin report no. 15100090 stating that the sapphire is of Kashmir origin, with no indications of heating. Together with a letter from Gübelin stating that this sapphire, '...possesses a richly saturated and homogenous colour, combined with a high degree of transparency, and a finely proportioned cut.'
