The gold mesh necklace applied with plaques of stylized Egyptian motifs suspending 23 ancient Egyptian pendants, Middle Kingdom/Late Period, circa 1900-100 B.C., of amethyst, carnelian, faience and steatite in the form of Egyptian gods Babi, Bastet, Bes, Isis and Horus, Nephthys, Theoris and Thoth, alternating with heart amulets, beetle scarabs and scaraboids, length 17 inches, with French assay and maker's marks; circa 1870. With the original fitted maroon leather and velvet case signed Wièse, 90 Rue de Richelieu.

Condition

In good condition. The mounting with surface wear and areas of discoloration; minor lead solder to the reverse where some of the pendants are attached. No apparent crimping to the mesh collar which is unusual for a piece of this age. The amethyst scarabs are semi-translucent to semi-opaque, light to medium-light purple with obvious color zoning, surface-reaching inclusions and a matte finish. The semi-translucent medium-light orange carnelian heart amulet and semi-opaque pink, white and black rhodonite heart amulets present a high polish. The faience in generally good condition, the face to one Horus chipped. The overall coloration of the piece is more muted than indicated by the printed catalogue illustration.
