Catalogue Note

Jean Després' significance as a jeweler of the Art Moderne movement is due to his role in both the machine world and artistic world. Després considered artists such as Amedeo Modigliani, Paul Signac and Georges Braque amongst his closest friends. In addition, he spent the years during World War I designing airplane engines for the military. These two different yet complementary realms led Després to join the Union des Artistes Modernes in 1929, where he became known for jewels which featured strong design as opposed to intrinsic value. Not only does the piece offered here represent a blending of the artistic and machine realms of Després' life, but it is also one of the rare pieces he created entirely out of gold.
