Description

  • René Boivin
  • gold, sapphire, diamond
Designed as an owl perched on a branch, the eyes and tail feathers set with round, oval and cushion-cut sapphires, accented by rose, old mine and single-cut diamonds weighing approximately 9.00 carats, gross weight approximately 21 dwts, with French assay and partial maker's marks; circa 1942.

Condition

In very good condition. The sapphires range from medium to deep very slightly violetish blue, and they range in clarity from eye-clean to lightly included. Most of the sapphires exhibit minor to moderate abrasions to the facet junctions. The diamonds are approximately H-J color, VS-SI clarity overall with a few I clarity examples. Under close examination the gold mount shows minor scratching commensurate with age and wear. Please note that a photocopy of the certificate is currently available; the hard copy is forthcoming and will be provided to the purchaser.

Catalogue Note

Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from François Cailles stating that the brooch is by René Boivin and dates from 1942.

Although René Boivin had been focusing on animal jewels since the 1920s, the 1940s saw an exploration into bird-inspired designs. Sparrows, eagles and roosters joined the owl seen here in the Boivin-designed aviary. The studious, watchful nature of the owl is represented in the textured gold frames accenting the sapphire eyes, the polished gold ears alert to its surroundings and the carefully carved gold talons clutching a tiny segment of a branch. Each diamond on the brooch is artfully arranged in borders representing feathers, layered one by one like shingles on a roof. Like the other animals in Boivin's bestiary, such as caterpillars, chameleons and beetles, each jeweled artwork perfectly and playfully represents the personality of the species represented.
