Catalogue Note

A PRESENTATION COPY OF JOYCE'S ONLY PLAY, inscribed to the journalist and all-round rogue Frank Harris (?1856--1931), born and brought up in Galway in a strictly puritanical environment, from which he reacted strongly for the duration of his life. Joyce and Harris found themselves targeted by the same authorities in May 1923 when both Harris's semi-pornographic  autobiography My Life and Loves and Joyce's Ulysses were banned from being imported into Britain, with the Home Office instructing all Chief Constables in the land to report any sales of either work.
