Catalogue Note
Executed in 1919, Western Skies is probably a scene in County Antrim and displays Paul Henry's sensitivity to this landscape and its fluctuating climate. The distinctive, changing light is reflected in the sky of billowing clouds - dark and light - that dramatically fill the composition. Underneath, the dark bog-land stretches into the distance, with silhouettes of peat stacks and flashes of water. From the right of the canvas, the linear brushwork denotes a sweep of rain moving across the landscape. The palette of restricted and tonal colours - soft whites, greys and browns - is deeply atmospheric and reveals a continued influence of his former teacher, James Abbot McNeill Whistler.
