Catalogue Note

A maiden stands on a swing supported by very thin cords by a branch of a slender fully-leaved sapling.  Her orange skirt moving slightly from the swing's movement.  She is aware of Krishna's gaze from an upper window of a pavilion but stares forward.  A peacock caws.  Against a moss-green hillside, plantain leaves blooming in the distance. A flight of white birds cross the dark blue sky.

For a relatable subject, depicting an onlooking lord instead of a handmaiden see the Art Institute of Chicago (from the McNear Collection) accession no. 1998.189.
