Condition

This painting originally on panel has been transferred onto canvas, presumably because there was some weakness to the structure of the panel. The paint layer is now stable, and the lining is successful. Under ultraviolet light, one can see a few small retouches in the upper center, a dozen or so spots in the lower sky, and a few in the water and harborside. If the picture were cleaned, a few more retouches will probably become apparent. There is a slightly ambiguous quality to some of the trees, the darker colors as well as the sky. The work should probably be hung as is. The above condition report has been prepared by Simon Parkes, an independent conservator who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
