Catalogue Note

The Omega Speedmaster was introduced in 1957 with the ref. 2915, and the model has cemented itself as one of the most recognized and important chronographs in sports' watch history, most notably becoming the only mechanical watch to be approved by NASA for space use. The present lot exhibits essential trademarks of the 2915: straight lugs, Broad Arrow hands, lack of crown guards, the famous caliber 321, and the applied Omega logo. The original Broad Arrow hands remain on the present lot, although with reapplied luminous material. The serial number is in the 15 million range, and as most -3 Speedmasters were with a 16 million serial number, the present lot could be considered one of the very first examples of the 2915-3 made. Additionally, the Omega Speedmaster ref 2915-3 can be considered a transitional model from the 2915 to the next generation 2998, and the watch may feature a black tachometer bezel like the present lot, rather than the brushed steel bezel mostly seen on the 2915-1 and -2 (which was regularly replaced with black tachometers during service). The present lot is also presented from the family of the original owner and becomes one of only a handful of 2915-3 Speedmasters to be seen at auction.
