Catalogue Note

Since the founding of the brand in New York in 1932, Harry Winston has never ceased to surprise the world every step of the way. With the persistent drive in perfection and creation, it is now not only perceived as the ultimate haute joaillerie designer brand, but also widely acclaimed as an avant-garde and adventurous watch manufacturer since its cooperation with various ingenious watchmakers in 2001, the beginning of Opus series.

It is not an understatement to comment that the Opus 12, the twelfth opus of the collection, is a true embodiment of mechanical aesthetics. In collaboration with Emmanuel Bouchet, a French master watchmaker who specialises in intricate complications, this watch consists of 607 parts and 80 jewels. The complex structure of the movement is justified by its magnificent and somewhat poetic approach to display time. The dial is composed of 27 hands, 12 for hour display and 12 for five minute display, the exact minute is revealed by the centre retrograde hand which springs back to 0 every five minutes, with a subsidiary hand below for constant seconds and power reserve indicator. Every five minutes, the shorter blue minute hand changes guard and flips to the next position indicating the passing of the said time lapse. Upon reaching the full hour, the whole dial is animated when the hour hand dances through every marker 360 degree before settling into the new hour. The visual effect performed by the watch when carrying out this technically challenging task can give the spectators such a thrill.

Despite its apparent ground-breaking and sophisticated mechanism, the elegant style of Opus 12 shows careful manipulation of the balance between subtlety and technicality. With an original retail price of US$260,000 and limited production in 120 pieces, this is the first time this extraordinary timepiece has ever appeared in auction.
