18 Karat Gold and Sapphire 'Melone' Evening Bag, Bulgari, France

The oval-shaped evening bag of fluted design, the thumbpiece set with one oval sapphire cabochon weighing approximately 2.00 carats, gross weight approximately 237 dwts, the interior fitted with a mirror, together with a detachable gold-colored silk tassel, measuring approximately 5¼ by 3¼ by 1½ inches, signed Bulgari, numbered 338 and BU840, with maker's mark.

 

In good condition. The metal displays light scratching and discoloration throughout, most noticeably by the hinge. The hinge mechanism works well. The tassle loop is stamped "Italy." The bag is stamped with sapphire weight, which is a medium, very slightly violetish blue and is heavily included with surface-reaching inclusions. With signed pouch and including a plastic comb signed "Made in France." The mirror on the interior of the bag is nicely reflective and shows no damage. The tassle is in good condition with some discoloration near the bag loop and some fraying near the tassle ends.
