Designed as a fantastical griffin, the torso set with a Mexican fire opal weighing 42.95 carats, accented by round diamonds weighing 18.25 carats, completed by marquise-shaped ruby eyes weighing .15 carat, gross weight approximately 61 dwts, signed Buccellati; fitted with pendant loop.

Condition

In good condition overall. The translucent fire opal shows a strong, attractive play of color and presents a whole spectrum of colors with oranges and green predominating. The diamonds set throughout the body of the griffin range from approximately G-J color, and are predominantly VS clarity with a few examples of SI clarity stones. The rubies are a medium-deep slightly pinkish red and lightly to moderately included. The brooch is bold in design, with length approximately 5 inches. Signed on the reverse and fitted with a pendant loop. Exact weights taken from the book that is noted in the cataloguing, page 142.

Catalogue Note

This one-of-a-kind brooch was designed in 1976 by Gianmaria Buccellati. The design was created around the shape, color and form of the Mexican fire opal. For a sketch and illustration of this design see Buccellati: Art in Gold, Silver and Gems edited by Maria Cristina Buccellati, pages 116-117.
