Description

  • George Nakashima
  • "Conoid" Bench
  • American black walnut, hickory and rosewood

Provenance

Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner

Condition

Overall in very good condition. This bench is executed utilizing a large scale board with extraordinary figuring when viewed firsthand. This bench was creating using wood from the same tree as the "Conoid" bench from the Rockefeller commission which Nakashima included in his first solo exhibition at the American Craft Museum. Acquired in 1974 this condition of this bench shows the sensitive care and attention of current owner. The top of the bench shows with a few minor surface scratches, and a few small areas of discoloration the result of liquid, as seen in the catalogue illustration concentrated adjacent to the vertical stays. With some minor abrasions to the edge along the proper right of the bench. The back proper right corner of the free edge with one very minor sensitively restored loss, which is only on close inspection. A magnificent work that shows the signature aesthetic of the designer. This lot is sold with a copy of the original design drawing by George Nakashima. -----

Catalogue Note

When this bench was acquired, George Nakashima informed the buyers that it was executed using wood from the same tree as the “Conoid” bench from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Rockefeller.  On inspection, there are clear similarities in the figuring, size and form between the present lot and the Rockefeller bench.
