Catalogue Note
Juan van der Hamen was one of the greatest Spanish still life painters of the 17th century who worked at the court of King Philip IV in Madrid during the 1620s. He pioneered the ‘stepped’ still life, in which objects are displayed on different levels, rendered in remarkable detail and sense of verisimilitude. The present work dates from the last few years of Van der Hamen’s life, circa 1629-31, a period of intense activity and creativity for the artist, which also coincided with the visit of Rubens to the Court of Philip IV in 1628-29.
