Description

  • A group of four portrait snuff boxes, mid to late 18th century
  • ivory, tortoiseshell, gold
  • 6.5 - 8 cm., 2 1/2 - 3 1/8 in. diameter
circular, the first tortoiseshell with gold mounts set with an enamel miniature of a lady, by Christian Friedrich Zincke (1683/5-1767), mid 18th century; a tortoiseshell-lined lacquer box scattered with nacre discs, corded silver-gilt mounts, set with an enamel miniature of Catherine the Great,  painted en grisaille on blue, circa 1780; a tortoiseshell-lined trellised composition box in 18th century taste, the lid inset with four decorative panels painted with flowers, two female profiles and monogram JC below a continental Count's coronet, gilt-metal mounts, late 19th century; and an ivory box, the lid set with a gold-framed grisaille profile of a girl, late 18th century

The second item: Manuscript Catalogue of Miniatures and Objects of Art, n.d., p. 4, said to be ‘Crewe Collection?’; The last item accompanied by a note inscribed: Left to / Lord Crewe by / Mrs Thomas Blackburn / April 13th 1886 / Supposed to be an Ancestor of the Crewe family

Condition

First has loose mounts, excellent miniature second crizzling and some discs lacking third base and bottom rim mounts lacking and chipping to composition lid and base cracked in several places; tortoiseshell-lined
