Bought in Holland by Robert Crewe-Milnes, 1st Marquess of Crewe (1858-1945) in 1896, according to the 1938 inventory at West Horsley.

Literature

Manuscript Catalogue of Pictures at West Horsley, n.d., vol. 2, p. 169, as by Gerard van Honthorst;
An Inventory […] of Pictures at West Horsley Place, Surrey, The property of the Marquess of Crewe, 1938, p. 25, in the drawing room, as by G. Van Honthorst;
J.Richard Judson and R. Ekkart, Gerrit van Honthorst, Ghent 1999, p. 302, cat. no. 432, as a version.

Condition

The condition is good overall, with no major loss or damage. A very dirty and opaque varnish is visible, with lots of surface dirt. The surface is beginning to flake around the sitter's chest. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals strengthening to the background and to the crown at the lower left. Retouchings to an old, vertical scratch, approximately 3 inches long, and to minor, old flaking, predominately in the darker tones of the background, are visible.
