Catalogue Note

PRESENTED BY GENERAL SHERMAN TO THE HON. ROBERT MILNES (later Lord Crewe), ST LOUIS, MISSOURI, SEPTEMBER 1875. Milnes accompanied his father Lord Houghton on a tour of the United States in the summer of 1875 and in St. Louis they were the guests of General Sherman, who showed them round the city and entertained them to dinner: 'In St. Louis they dined with the Civil War hero, General Sherman, an evening which Robert [Crewe-Milnes] records in his diary ... "After dinner we sat and talked in the General's room; he talked of the war which, as his son-in-law said, he very rarely did... He gave Father a handsome map and me some photos writing our names upon each."' (Pope-Hennessy)

The photographs comprise: 12 by T.H. O'Sullivan from Lieut. Wheeler's Expedition of 1873: Arizona Series no.1, Indian Series nos. 50, 51, 60, 63, 64, 69, 71, 72, 74, 75 and 76 (two inscribed and signed by Sherman on the reverse); 6 by W.H. Jackson (Washington, D.C.) of 'The Great West'; 14 by an unknown photographer of native Americans, each captioned in ink on the reverse (one inscribed and signed by Sherman on the reverse); 3 by W.H. Jackson from 'Scenery of the Union Pacific Railroad', nos.153-155 (Great Salt Lake City); one by T.H. O'Sullivan from 'Colorado River series', no.144 (Mohave Indian); one by W.H. Jackson from 'Studies among the Rocky Mountains', no.533 (Sawtell's Ranch, Henry's Lake, interior); and two of Fort Sumter by an unknown photographer.
