Condition

Overall very good condition with some minor surface dirt at several places, consistent with age and handling. Remains of a dark paint at some places in the crevices and to the back of the Rivergod. A few very minor chips to the lower edge of the base, with one minor lack to the second toe of the Rivergod's proper right foot. Very desirable terra cotta which is very finely modelled.

Catalogue Note

Dès 1757, Caffieri expose au Salon une version en plâtre d'un dieu fleuve sous les traits d'un vieil homme barbu assis. De ce modèle, il réalisa un marbre qu'il présenta, en 1759, comme morceau de réception à l'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture (musée du Louvre, inv. n° MR 1773). La composition de notre Dieu Fleuve est identique à celle d'une seconde terre cuite de Caffieri, signée et datée 1755, se trouvant au Fitzwilliam Museum de Cambridge (inv. n° M.6-1992). De plus, une version en plâtre patiné de ce modèle (39 x 45 cm) appartenait jadis à la collection Jules Strauss (sa vente Paris-Palais Galliera, le 7 mars 1961, lot 87).
