Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. The lateral edges are partially deckled. There are artist's pinholes in all 4 corners which may have led to minor tears in the bottom left and upper right corners. The edges of the sheet have discolored slightly with age. There is evidence of foxing throughout. There are graphite smudges on the sheet which are inherent to the artist's working method and chosen medium. The colors are bright and fresh. There are scattered pinpoint light brown spot accretions, mostly concentrated near the yellow form in the upper right quadrant and along the left side. The verso of the sheet exhibits some additional light brown accretions which are not visible from the front of the sheet. The sheet is hinged verso intermittently to the matte. Framed under Plexiglas.

Catalogue Note

"[In Virginia] his imagination had been set free as he focused on his surroundings. He told Agnes that he 'saw the trees as battles and horses in Uccello, and he saw the knights in armor and everything alive, their arrangements against the sky or against the hillside. He saw everything in tensions and relations of shapes to each other.'" Nouritza Matossian, Black Angel: A Life of Arshile Gorky, London, 1998, p. 349
