Catalogue Note

“Sam Francis’s paintings are hymns to the joy of life. For the painter himself, who has suffered many illnesses they are the same as life. Francis, like Monet, Bonnard, and Matisse before him, celebrates the mysteries of universal creation and perception, and of emotional absorption into the world with each stroke he places on his canvas.”
