Description

6 1/2-inch enamel time dial, signed Bourdin, above a moon phase indicator and subsidiary day and date dials, the month dial with finely enamelled polychrome zodiacal signs and bisextile indication, subsidiary thermometer and barometer dials below, all within a finely engraved gilt mask, the timepiece movement with tandem spring barrels and lever platform escapement, high count train, signed to the rear of the front plate Bourdin A Paris, separate calendar movement with spring barrel, Bourdon-type barometer and thermometer signed Arrouit, Paris, the fully glazed arched case with a moulded base inset with enamelled equation conversion tables

Provenance

An undated type-written note in French with this clock from A La Vieille Russie states that this clock was commissioned by King Louis Philippe and offered to the Minister of Belgium, the Comte de Hun, and that the clock remained in the Hun family until 1935.

Condition

Flawless enamel dials, gilt mask in very good condition. Movement complete and running at time of cataloguing but is very much in need of a clean, barometer and thermometer not tested. Case in generally good condition, 2 small veneer losses to lower left side, other old minor cracks, scuffs and marks throughout. With door key, original gilt winder and modern spare winder.

Catalogue Note

A E Bourdin is recorded as working in Rue de la Paix, Paris between 1840 and the 1860s. Known for the high quality of his work and particularly for his carriage clocks, he regularly exhibited in the Paris Expositions and won medals in 1844, 1855 and 1867. Some clocks are signed 'Hger du Roi'.
