  • Milton Caniff (1907-1988)
  • Encre de Chine sur papier
  • 71 x 54 cm (papier), 28 x 21.2 in (paper) ; 66 x 48 cm (dessin), 26 x 18.9 in (drawing)
(Sunday Page - 14 juin 1942)

Catalogue Note

Milton Caniff has often been cited as the main influence on Hugo Pratt. But if we look at this page of Terry & The Pirates, it is the drawing of Hubinon, or indeed of Paape, than comes to mind. Caniff was actually a major influence on many European comics artists. His way of using swathes of Chinese ink is still remarkable, heightening the drama, for example in panels 4 and 5 of this page, and in the opening panel, our hero Pat Ryan and The Dragon Lady.
