travaillé dans le goût baroque ; chacune des faces ornée en applique de l’avers et du revers de la croix de l’ordre sur un fond amati, le médaillon maintenu par sa bélière et son anneau nervuré ; (très petit éclat à l’émail au revers d’une branche de la croix, sinon excellent état général)

Ce médaillon a probablement été porté, soit par Louis-Philippe d’Orléans (1725-1785), reçu chevalier de l’ordre en 1740 alors qu'il est duc de Chartres, soit par son fils Louis-Philippe d’Orléans (1747-1793), lui aussi duc de Chartres, lorsqu'il est reçu dans l'ordre le 30 mai 1762, ou encore par ces deux princes successivement. Une autre provenance possible serait Jean-Marie de Bourbon, duc de Penthièvre (1725-1793), investi en 1742, dont la fille Adélaïde de Bourbon Penthièvre, duchesse d’Orléans (1753-1821) fut la femme de "Philippe-Egalité" et la mère du roi Louis-Philippe.

On connaît d'autres médaillons similaires offerts par Louis XVI à certains chevaliers de l’ordre lors des premières promotions du début de son règne. Voir également le lot suivant.

Order of the Saint-Esprit, an oval pendant medallion in gold and enamels, garnished in baroque style, circa 1750-1770, each side with applied miniature of the obverse and reverse of the Order on a matted ground, with integral ring-mount and ribbed riband-carrier for suspension, width 29mm, wt. 25.3g all in, minor enamel loss at one arm of cross on obverse, otherwise in extremely fine condition.

Probably worn either by Louis Philippe d’Orléans (1725-1785), who was admitted as a chevalier of the order as duc de Chartres in 1740, and/or by his son, Louis Philippe (1747-1793), duc de Chartres, who was invested on 30 may 1762. Another possible recipient is Jean Marie de Bourbon, duc de Penthièvre (1725-1793), invested in 1742, whose daughter Adélaïde de Bourbon Penthièvre, duchesse d’Orléans (1753-1821) was "Philippe-Egalité"’s wife and king Louis-Philippe’s mother.
