The document is a legal writ, 2 pages on a sheet of wove paper (8 3/4 x 7 in.; 222 x 178 mm; sight), np, 2 July 1794, binding Marshall and Rawleigh Colston to purchase for the sum of 1,000 pounds "a tract of land commonly called & known by the name of Goony run Manor containing thirteen thousand nine hundred & twenty acres lying in the county of Shenando," from Denny Fairfax; with two full internal signatures of Marshall, also signed by Colston and by witnesses Fanny Graham, and Mary Keith. Very short separation at central fold. Matted, framed, and double-glazed with an engraved portrait of Marshall. — The note is a somewhat cryptic letter of introduction to an unidentified recipient , 1 page (5 5/8 x 6 7/8 in.; 142 x 174 mm; sight), np, nd: "I enclose you an introductory letter to my friend W. Lee which I beg the favor of you to deliver. Tell him I have written very regularly to him but have not yet received a line from him or his government. Farewell—I wish you a very pleasant voyage. …" Short repaired tear in the left margin. Matted, framed, and glazed with an engraved portrait of Marshall.
