Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. The tip of the two horns missing as visible in the catalogue illustration. Thick red pigment patina with a residue of fluff and overall a rough surface. The projecting element representing the mouth shows a brighter, deep patina.

Catalogue Note

"Cet 'imposant' masque Mangam, avec ses cornes recourbées l'une vers l'autre, représente vraisemblablement une antilope redbuck. Il se distingue par la dimension de sa crête centrale, la longueur de son museau et l'intégration de plusieurs traits anthropomorphes : une rangée de délicates incisions scandant la crête médiane et les lignes ornant le museau rappelant des motifs de scarifications. Cette œuvre démontre superbement la pratique d'enduire d'ocre rouge la surface des masques. L'absence de documentation de terrain ne permet pas de l'attribuer à un groupe spécifique : Kantana, Kulere, Mada ou Rindre" (Barbara Frank in Berns, Fardon et Kasfir, Central Nigeria Unmasked: Arts of the Benue River Valley, 2001, p. 393).
