Condition
Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Gaps on the upper part of the leather links retaining the beard as visible in the catalogue illustration. Remains of colored pigments on both cheeks. Fibers and hairs of the beard are frayed but authentic. The verso of the mask is filled with a mix of dry earth and clay into which is inserted an old metal hook.

"Cette texture homogène de la forme première de telle ou telle de vos sculptures, divers opérateurs traditionnels - prêtres, devins ou sacrificateurs -, au cours de pratiques culturelles, rituelles ou thérapeutiques, parfois périodiquement réitérées, l'auront partiellement dissimulée sous un agrégat de matières composites ou une accumulation, apparemment des plus insolites, d'attributs "magiques". A la miniaturisation délicate du visage aux yeux mi-clos répond l'impressionnante accumulation de matières présidant à l'efficience de ce charme rare. Relevant de la propriété individuelle, les répliques miniatures du grand masque du lignage étaient destinées à protéger leurs propriétaires. Voir Phillips (Africa.
