Condition

Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. A small open crack to the rear on the back and stool. Old nuanced patina with various surfaces with thickness in places and very polished areas to the edges. Variety of dark and reddish brown tones.

La pose assise, tête appuyée sur la main est, selon Robert Farris Thompson (in Falgayrettes-Leveau, Le geste Kongo, 2002, p. 92), associée dans la pensée Kongo, "à la figure du chef idéal. Il considère la question, en évalue les éléments et s'abstient de tout commentaire avant de se décider. [Cette gestuelle] peut également correspondre à celle d'un ancêtre qui médite sur la mort". A la solennité du geste s'ajoute ici la majesté exprimée dans la haute coiffe renfermant la charge protectrice bilongo
