Catalogue Note
Dating from the middle of the 1960s Red is a splendid and rare example of Bonalumi’s quadri-oggetto series, real three-dimensional sculptures ideated as an extension of painting. Bonalumi’s sculptures originate from the modelling and the distortion of space in which they belong to. In his work, space has a central role being a virtual, or negative environment in which the quadri-oggetto are being instrumental in the definition of the real positive space. The sculptures create therefore a mutual connection between the observant and the observed object.
The present work is an object in which the canvas is stretched and the rounded underlying profiles are perpendicularly inserted in accordance with the equilibriums of the sculpture’s extensions and inflections. The three-dimensional surface of the sculpture occupies a specific position in the space with a majestic use of a vibrant red colour. The chromatic dimension of Bonalumi’s sculptures is a crucial element in the spatial positioning of the artwork itself.
The poetics of Bonalumi’s work comply with Manzoni and Castellani’s aesthetic research in the attempts to go beyond painting. For this purpose Bonalumi uses the canvas as a means for creating the work, bending and flexing it, letting the creation of a three-dimensional object that dialogues and exist in the surrounding environment. The sculpture seizes the space accessing a new dimension beyond traditional representation.
